Capacity Building Workshop on Ugandan Laws and the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA)
In 2023, LHRA organized a capacity-building workshop to strengthen the knowledge and resilience of Trans-refugees regarding Ugandan laws, with a particular focus on the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) of 2023. This workshop was designed to equip participants with a clear understanding of the legal environment they live in, the risks posed by discriminatory legislation, and the strategies available to safeguard their rights and wellbeing. Through interactive sessions, participants learned about key provisions of Ugandan law, the implications of the AHA, and practical steps for navigating legal challenges. The workshop also provided guidance on accessing legal aid, engaging with human rights defenders, and building networks of support to reduce vulnerability to arrest, harassment, and exploitation. Beyond legal awareness, the training fostered empowerment and confidence, enabling transgender refugees to advocate for themselves and their peers. It also reinforced LHRA’s role as a protector and educator, ensuring that marginalized communities are not left isolated in the face of hostile policies.
As part of its commitment to health and wellbeing, LHRA provides free medical consultations for its members. This initiative ensures that transgender refugees, who often face barriers to accessing healthcare due to stigma and discrimination, can receive timely and dignified medical attention.
Through these consultations, members benefit from preventive care, diagnosis, and treatment referrals, covering areas such as HIV/AIDS, STIs, mental health, and general health concerns. By removing financial obstacles, LHRA empowers its community to prioritize their health without fear of exclusion or neglect.
The program also contributes to public health goals by promoting early detection and prevention, reducing the spread of infectious diseases, and encouraging healthier lifestyles. In addition, it strengthens trust and solidarity within the refugee community, positioning LHRA as a safe and reliable hub for care.
Beyond individual health, these consultations have a broader impact: they reduce the burden on overstretched healthcare systems, promote equity in access to medical services, and reinforce the principle that health is a human right. By combining compassion with practical support, LHRA ensures that marginalized refugees are not left behind in the pursuit of dignity and wellbeing.
